Smart BioMaterials Consortium (SBMC) Opens Cureon Production Facility in Eindhoven – A New Hub for MedTech & BioTech within the RegMed XB Pilot Factory

On October 1, 2025, in front of a full house, Cureon – the new Innovation Center for MedTech and BioTech – officially opened its doors at High Tech Campus Eindhoven. The initiative, driven by High Tech Campus Eindhoven, Smart BioMaterials Consortium (SBMC), Brainport Development, and Brabant Development Agency (BOM), marks a major step forward for healthcare innovation in the region.

Located in building HTC 11, Cureon combines shared workspaces, laboratories, and advanced production facilities to accelerate the journey from research to real-world medical applications. By uniting infrastructure, expertise, and collaboration, Cureon strengthens the region’s position as a European frontrunner in MedTech and BioTech innovation.

SBMC’s Pilot Production Facility: From Lab to Life
At the heart of Cureon are SBMC’s GMP-compliant cleanrooms (ISO 6/7) and laboratories – a 400 m² Pilot Production Facility dedicated to scaling biomaterial-based implants and regenerative medicine technologies.

These facilities provide innovators with:

  • Immediate access to GMP cleanrooms without the cost or delay of building their own
  • Flexible short- or long-term rental options aligned with project needs
  • Technical and regulatory support, including Quality Management as a Service (QMaaS)

Alongside the cleanrooms, SBMC offers a development lab equipped with advanced tools for biomaterials and tissue engineering, such as:

  • Confocal microscopy
  • Electrospinning
  • SEM-EDX
  • Tensile testing
  • Biocompatibility workflows

“Our GMP-compliant cleanrooms enable companies to develop and produce under conditions required for clinical use. For start-ups, access to these facilities and our expertise can significantly shorten time to market,” says Jan Rietsema, CEO of SBMC. “Being part of Cureon means we are directly connected to a vibrant ecosystem of universities, hospitals, biotech and medtech entrepreneurs. This combination of infrastructure and collaboration creates a powerful environment where new biomaterials and medical devices can move faster from lab to life – ultimately benefitting patients worldwide.”

An Ecosystem of Innovation

The RegMed XB Pilot Factory is an ecosystem of specialized pilot lines, including ICAT, SBMC, NecstGen, LUMC, and ReGEN Biomedical. Together, we support universities, research institutes, start-ups, and industry in developing, testing, upscaling, and producing new regenerative medicine therapies. Our goal is to bring new solutions for chronic diseases to patients in a cost-effective and efficient manner.
