Dr. Maarten Rookmaaker

Maarten Rookmaaker is a nephrologist and clinical academic whose scientific work focuses on the biology and pathophysiology of the kidney, with particular emphasis on kidney development, stem cell biology, regeneration, and translational research. His work explores how fundamental developmental and cellular mechanisms shape renal function and disease, and how these insights can be harnessed for disease modelling, innovative diagnostics, and regenerative medicine. A particular area of interest is the use of stem-cell-derived kidney organoids as experimental models to investigate renal development and disease, creating a bridge between fundamental biology and clinical nephrology.

Alongside his scientific activities, Rookmaaker maintains a strong clinical commitment to patients with rare and hereditary renal disorders and is actively involved in the education and training of nephrologists. He is Head of Nephrology Training Program and Secretary of the Nephrology Section of the Dutch Internists’ Association (NIV), contributing to the professional development and organisation of nephrology training and practice. He is also a member of the Nephrology Section of the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS).

His engagement extends beyond academic and clinical medicine to broader societal questions surrounding healthcare and medical innovation. Publications about decisional regret and the responsible introduction of new medicines reflect his interest in the interface between scientific evidence, clinical decision-making, innovation, and society.
